Integrating New Technology into Medical Devices to lead the Development of Next Generation Systems

Dr. Carlos B. González has over 20 years of medical device engineering and research experience, serving in a variety of leadership roles in both large and small medical device and technology organizations.

Most recently, Dr. González served as Vice President of Engineering at Great Basin Scientific (a molecular diagnostics company), where he was responsible for developing their next generation analyzer, which offered higher throughput, lower COGS, improved reliability in a smaller footprint to accommodate the company’s growing menu of low-plex and multiplex diagnostic tests.

Prior to Great Basin, he served as R&D Director of instrument development at Abbott Point of Care, where he built and led the engineering team responsible for designing and developing a novel digital imaging based Hematology system, which used a drop of blood and a single-use cartridge. Previous to this, he held positions in new technology development with Siemens Medical Diagnostics, Abbott Pharmaceutical (now AbbVie), and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories’ Micro Technology Center, where he helped demonstrate real-time PCR on-a-chip with nL volumes (which led to the creation of Cepheid). Dr. González received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in MEMS (micro-TAS, micro-fluidics, sensor and actuators) from the University of California at Davis.
